New State Authority To Designate Terrorist Organizations

Image
TAMPA, Florida ( FLAN 35 ) — Florida began implementing a new state authority in July allowing officials to designate certain organizations as terrorist organizations under Florida law. Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the implementation as several new laws took effect across the state. The move became one of the most controversial aspects of Florida’s 2026 legislative agenda. State officials said the authority was designed to combat organizations they consider threats to public safety and prevent extremist influence. Civil-rights advocates and other critics have raised constitutional and due-process concerns about the state’s authority. The issue is expected to remain a major legal and political debate as Florida applies the new law. State officials said the policy is part of a broader effort to combat terrorism and foreign or extremist influence.

More Than 100 New Florida Laws Take Effect July 1

TALLAHASSEE, Florida ( FLAN 35 ) — More than 100 new Florida laws took effect July 1, bringing changes to education, government, transportation, business and public safety. Among the changes was the state’s new $117.6 billion budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year. Other legislation addressed data centers, local government authority, election rules and education requirements. One new law also changed the name of Palm Beach International Airport to honor President Donald Trump. The wide-ranging changes mean Floridians will see new rules affecting different aspects of daily life. Businesses, schools, local governments and state agencies are responsible for implementing the laws. July 1 is traditionally one of the most significant dates for Florida legislation because many laws approved during the legislative session become effective at the beginning of the state fiscal year.
