New Measures Targeting Local Government Spending Signed

Image
BRADENTON, Florida ( FLAN 35 ) — Florida enacted new legislation in June designed to increase transparency and accountability in local government. Gov. Ron DeSantis said the legislation would strengthen fiscal oversight and support efforts to provide property-tax relief for homeowners. The measure comes as Florida communities continue experiencing rapid population growth and increasing demand for public services. Local governments rely heavily on property taxes to fund operations, including public safety, roads and other services. State officials argued that residents should have greater transparency into how local governments spend tax dollars. The legislation also intensified the broader debate over state control and local government authority. Florida homeowners will continue watching the issue closely as local governments prepare budgets and set property-tax rates. Photo courtesy Investopedia

The budget will guide state spending during the fiscal year beginning July 1. For Florida residents, the budget affects state agencies, schools, infrastructure projects, public safety programs and numerous other government services. The spending plan also provides a snapshot of the state’s priorities heading into the second half of 2026.
